After finishing my report on ARS, I went on an unplanned trip to Prague, the Czech capital, on a whim.
Lately, I've come to realize that travel and art is somewhat similar. In both cases, there is joy and surprise in encountering new things. Maybe this is what I like to pursue - experiences that make you want to talk to your friends about it later.

After finishing my report on ARS, I went on an unplanned trip to Prague, the Czech capital, on a whim.

I met the Czech artist Misha through my reportage at ART Electronica. The fact that ARS attracts artists like Misha is interesting in itself.

I went to Misha's house, where he showed me extremely rare file footage. I feel like I saw a glimpse of just how deep and monomaniacal Czech's moving image culture is. First is footage of the Czechoslovakian pavilion at the Montreal Expo in 1967. This was a time when people were grappling with various possibilities that the moving image has to offer.

Lanterna Magica, a theatre performance that incorporates moving images, known only by the people in the know. Apparently this is hailed as the root of media art. Even now, there is a theatre especially for Lanterna Magica performances. There was even a time when vankmajer was involved in the video production.

Misha led me through the art-related locations in the city of Prague. He shared a lot of information that even the best guidebooks don't offer. Only a local artist would know.

Enjoy this movie.
